Calvary Public Hospital to be taken over by ACT government to make way for new $1bn northside hospital

In a controversial move, the ACT government has announced plans to take over the running of the Catholic-owned Calvary Public Hospital.

In a statement, the government said it was allocating $1 billion towards a new hospital in Bruce at the existing Calvary site, with construction set to begin as early as 2025.

There had previously been negotiations between the government and Calvary Health Care spanning a number of months that eventually proved unsuccessful. 

The government said today it would introduce new legislation to the Legislative Assembly on Thursday to enact the Health Infrastructure Enabling Bill, compulsorily acquiring the hospital's assets and effectively transitioning Calvary staff.
